After the holiday festivities the New Year is the perfect time to turn our focus back on health!
Reaching and maintaining a healthy weight is important for overall health and can help you prevent and control many diseases and conditions. When you are overweight you’re at higher risk of developing serious health problems, including heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, gallstones, and breathing problems, among others.
Many factors can contribute to a person’s weight. These factors include environment, family history and genetics, metabolism (the way your body changes food and oxygen into energy), and behavior or habits.
Follow a healthy diet, and if you are overweight or obese, reduce your daily intake by 500 calories for weight loss
Are physically active
Limit the time you spend being physically inactive
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. taught us that “injustice in health is the most shocking and inhuman.” His vision of equality extends to the right of every person to live a healthy life. Today and every day, North Side Christian Health Center strives to make that vision a reality for our neighbors.
As we look ahead to a new year, National Day of Racial Healing 2026 invites us to take stock of where we are as individuals, communities and a nation.
“When so much of the public discourse seems intent on pitting us against one another, the National Day of Racial Healing offers an opportunity to make a different choice,” said La June Montgomery Tabron, W.K. Kellogg Foundation (WKKF) President & CEO. “No matter who we are or what we look like, we want our children to have an equitable opportunity to thrive at home, in school and in community. To achieve that dream, we must commit to bridging our divisions by engaging our families, friends, neighbors and coworkers in respectful conversations that help us heal.”
The day creates space for people to talk openly about their personal and collective experiences and build the trust needed to advance racial equity. Alongside hundreds of events hosted by communities nationwide,
Community building has been at the heart of the National Day of Racial Healing from the very beginning. Since the inaugural day in 2017, more than 1,000 individual and community-hosted events and activities have taken place across the country. To help support and expand the growing movement of racial healing, a new action kit focused on the healing power of the arts and creative expression, as well as a set of newly updated kits for youth and community, the workplace and policymakers are now available at DayofRacialHealing.org in English and Spanish.
A healthy heart is vital to overall wellness, and critical to readiness and optimizing performance. Cardiovascular disease — including heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure — is the number one killer of men and women in the United States. Lowering your risk factors for heart disease is critical to your health and helps improve readiness and mission performance.
Knowing the risk factors, warning signs, and symptoms of heart disease is key to avoiding serious health complications, including death, but many people don’t know the signs.
High blood pressure, high LDL cholesterol, and smoking are key risk factors for heart disease.
Warning signs of heart disease include fatigue, chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, among other symptoms.
Chest pain or discomfort.
Upper body pain or discomfort in the arms, back, neck, jaw, or upper stomach.
Shortness of breath.
Nausea, lightheadedness, or cold sweats.
Eat a balanced, healthy diet, low in sodium, cholesterol, and saturated fat (the Mediterranean diet is considered an excellent model).
Get at least 2.5 hours a week of physical activity.
Get seven to eight hours of sleep.
Manage stress.
Don't use tobacco.
Keep alcohol consumption low.
Dentistry plays a vital role in maintaining overall health and well-being, often overlooked by many. Beyond the common perception of dentistry as merely addressing dental issues, it is an essential component of preventive healthcare that contributes significantly to one's overall health. In this article, we explore the various ways in which dentistry is crucial to achieving and sustaining good health.
Oral health is intricately connected to the health of the entire body. Poor oral hygiene can lead to various systemic issues, including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and respiratory problems. Regular dental check-ups and cleanings help prevent and identify potential issues early on, reducing the risk of systemic complications.
Dentistry emphasizes preventive care to avoid the development of dental diseases. Regular cleanings, fluoride treatments, and dental exams are essential in preventing cavities, gum disease, and other oral health issues. By addressing problems at their early stages, dentists help patients avoid more significant and costly treatments down the line.
Healthy teeth and gums are crucial for proper nutrition. Dental problems, such as missing or decayed teeth, can hinder an individual's ability to chew and digest food effectively. Dentistry ensures that individuals can maintain a balanced and nutritious diet, supporting their overall health and vitality.
While aesthetic concerns may seem secondary, the appearance of one's teeth can have a significant impact on self-esteem and confidence. Cosmetic dentistry procedures, such as teeth whitening and orthodontic treatments, not only improve the appearance of the smile but also contribute to an individual's overall well-being and social interactions.
Dentistry is not just about treating dental issues; it is a cornerstone of preventive healthcare and a key player in maintaining optimal overall health. Regular dental check-ups, cleanings, and adopting good oral hygiene practices are essential components of a holistic approach to well-being. By recognizing the importance of dentistry, individuals can pave the way for a healthier and happier life.

National Physician Week takes place each year from March 25 - March 31 and includes National Doctor's Day on March 30. This is a week for all physicians to be recognized by their patients, celebrated by their peers, and take pride in the hard work that they do.
We'd like to especially acknowledge the NSCHC providers who devote so much to our patients and our organization.
This is an opportunity to reflect on the broader challenges facing the healthcare system. From addressing disparities in access to healthcare to tackling public health crises, doctors are at the forefront of efforts to improve the health and quality of life for all individuals.

Dr. Lucia Covato, DMD, Chief Dental Officer, and Lorenza Hois, PHDHP
As we celebrate National Dental Hygienist Appreciation Week, it's time to shine the spotlight on Lorenza Hois, PHDHP.
Lorenza, like all dental hygienists, is much more than just a professional who cleans teeth. She is an educator, advocate, and preventive dentistry care specialist committed to helping patients achieve optimal oral health.
Dental hygienists are the frontline warriors in the battle against cavities, gum disease, and other dental maladies.
Oral health is closely linked to your overall well-being. Neglecting dental hygiene can lead to problems like gum disease, cavities, and even more serious health issues such as heart disease and diabetes. Dental hygienists are essential in preventing these complications by providing professional care and educating patients. Their efforts not only help maintain healthy, bright smiles but also support long-term health and wellness.
To all the dental hygienists out there – and especially Lorenza - thank you for your commitment, your gentle care, and your dedication to keeping our smiles healthy and bright. We are truly grateful for all that you do!
National Infant Immunization Week (NIIW) reminds us of the important role of vaccines in preventing diseases that pose serious threats to infants such as measles and whooping cough.
Ensuring that infants receive timely immunizations is paramount in protecting them from preventable diseases. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends a vaccination schedule starting from birth and continuing through early childhood to provide maximum protection against a range of illnesses.
By adhering to the recommended immunization schedule, parents and caregivers not only shield their children from potentially life-threatening diseases but also contribute to the concept of herd immunity. This collective protection benefits the entire community, including those who may be unable to receive certain vaccines due to medical reasons.
In addition to routine childhood vaccinations, recent years have seen the development of innovative vaccines that offer protection against emerging threats, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. The rapid development and deployment of vaccines against the novel coronavirus serve as a testament to the power of scientific collaboration and innovation in safeguarding public health.
North Side Christian Health Center encourages you to make sure your child's vaccines are up to date. Call 412-321-4001 if you have any questions about infant vaccinations, or click below to schedule an appointment.

May is National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month and the timing is perfect because it's peak allergy season!
Allergens, substances that cause allergies, can trigger asthma. Asthma is a chronic disease of the lungs that causes wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, and coughing. It can occur at any age, but is most commonly diagnosed during childhood. Nationally, nearly one in 13 school-age children have asthma, and that rate is rising more rapidly in preschool-aged children and those living in urban inner cities than in any other group. Asthma that is not well-controlled can greatly limit a person's quality of life.
Common allergens that can exacerbate asthma include dust mites, cockroaches, pollen, molds, animal allergens, and rodents.
Asthma rates are not the same across demographic groups. Non-Hispanic Black, Hispanic, and Indigenous groups have the highest asthma rates compared to other races and ethnicities. Structural racism and discrimination, limited access to quality health care, and environmental pollution contribute to asthma rate disparities.
Mental Health Awareness Month elevates the importance of emotional well-being and reduces stigma around mental illness. This year’s theme, “Turn Awareness into Action,” set by Mental Health America, urges individuals to go beyond understanding mental health issues and take meaningful steps toward self-care, connection, and advocacy. This message resonates deeply with the providers of North Side Christian Health Center. With a mission to provide whole-person care - mind, body, and spirit - NSCHC is proud to provide integrated medical, dental, and behavioral health services to the underserved populations of Pittsburgh’s Northside.
“NSCHC provides the exclusive opportunity for our patients to be cared for holistically,” says Hector Santos, LPC, one of NSCHC’s Behavioral Health Therapists. “By focusing on the whole person, rather than just symptoms, individuals can achieve more sustainable and lasting improvements in their mental health.”
One resource being highlighted this month is the “5 C’s of Mental Health,” a framework that promotes well-being through five pillars: Connection, Coping, Compassion, Community, and Care. These guiding principles align with NSCHC’s approach to behavioral health—supporting patients through relationship-building, resilience training, community belonging, and access to self-care strategies. As NSCHC continues its work to address health disparities, its commitment to culturally competent, holistic care serves as a model for what it means to not just be aware of mental health, but to act with compassion and purpose.
This May, NSCHC invites the Northside community to take action—whether through self-reflection, supporting a neighbor, or seeking help—and to remember that mental health is health.

On May 6, NSCHC proudly joins the nation in celebrating National Nurses Day, honoring the extraordinary dedication, compassion, and skill of nurses who serve on the frontlines of patient care every single day. This special day marks the beginning of National Nurses Week, which concludes on May 12—the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the pioneer of modern nursing.
“Our nurses are the foundation of patient care at NSCHC,” says Carilynn Coulter, Chief Operations Officer. “They lead with empathy, expertise, and an unwavering commitment to equity. We are deeply grateful for their impact on the health and lives of our patients and our community.”
Known as “The Lady with the Lamp,” Florence Nightingale revolutionized healthcare in the 19th century with her unwavering commitment to hygiene and compassionate care. Through her rigorous handwashing and sanitation practices while caring for wounded soldiers during the Crimean War, she helped reduce death rates from 42% to just 2%—establishing the principles that would shape modern nursing.
Today, nurses remain at the core of healthcare delivery. With over three million nurses serving across the U.S., they make up the largest segment of the country’s healthcare workforce. At NSCHC, our nursing staff plays a vital role in delivering whole-person care to the Northside community—providing everything from preventive screenings to chronic disease management, care coordination, and health education. Their commitment to patients goes far beyond clinical duties. NSCHC nurses build trust, empower patients, and advocate for equitable access to care, especially for those who are uninsured, underinsured, or facing complex health and social challenges. They embody our mission every day, offering not just medical support, but hope, dignity, and compassion.
As we celebrate National Nurses Day, NSCHC extends heartfelt gratitude to our nursing team. Your tireless dedication makes a lasting impact, and we are proud to stand beside you in delivering high-quality, inclusive care.
To all nurses: thank you for being the heartbeat of healthcare.

North Side Christian Health Center is proud to provide culturally competent and inclusive services to everyone.
🖤❤️💚 On Juneteenth, we honor the end of slavery in the U.S. — and reaffirm our commitment to equity, freedom, and justice in every form.
Health equity is civil rights in action. Too many communities of color still face barriers to care, higher rates of chronic illness, and lower life expectancies. That’s not freedom — and it’s not acceptable.
Let’s not only celebrate liberation — let’s work toward it. Because true freedom means equitable access to health, healing, and hope for everyone.
Let’s use this day to build a more just and equitable future for all.
On #WorldRefugeeDay, we recognize not only the courage of displaced people worldwide—but also the urgent need for health equity.
Refugees often face immense barriers to care: language, trauma, discrimination, and lack of access.
Let’s work toward a future where every person, including refugees, has access to compassionate, culturally competent, and affordable care. 💙
Racial and ethnic minorities often suffer from poor mental health outcomes due to multiple factors, including:
Lack of access to quality mental health care services
Cultural stigma surrounding mental health care,
Discrimination
Overall lack of awareness about mental health
NSCHC’s Behavioral Health Department specializes in developing culturally informed behavioral health and community wellness services within the ethnic minority, refugee, immigrant, and other underserved communities.
Help us provide equitable behavioral health services to all by making your gift to North Side Christian Health Center.
Keep a fire extinguisher, bucket of water, or garden hose handy, in case of fire or other mishap.
Light fireworks one at a time, then move away from the fireworks device quickly.
Never try to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks. Soak them with water, and throw them away.
Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse. Move to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks.
Never point or throw fireworks (including sparklers) at anyone.
After fireworks complete their burning, to prevent a trash fire, douse the spent device with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding the device.
Make sure fireworks are legal in your area, and only purchase and set off fireworks that are labeled for consumer (not professional) use.
Never use fireworks while impaired by alcohol or drugs.
National Health Center Week (NHCW) is an annual event that highlights the essential role Community Health Centers play in improving public health and advancing health equity. Health centers represent the nation’s largest primary care network, serving 31.5 million patients nationwide.
With a mission to make high-quality, affordable care available to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay or insurance status, health centers save lives on the front lines of our nation’s most pressing public health challenges. They are powered by a workforce of nearly 300,000 dedicated professionals who not only prevent illness but also address the social drivers that may cause it -- climate change, homelessness, substance use disorders, food insecurity and behavioral health.
One in 5 uninsured people
One in 3 people living in poverty
One in 7 rural residents
Nearly 9 million children
400,000 veterans
This year’s NHCW celebration is sponsored by the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC). To learn more about the mission and accomplishments of health centers, visit www.nachc.org.

Healthcare workers embody the spirit of service and remind us of the true meaning of work that uplifts others. Today, we express our deepest gratitude for their sacrifice, perseverance, and the healing they bring to countless lives.
Thank you to all healthcare professionals for the essential role you play. We celebrate you today and every day.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a reminder of how important it is to take charge of your health through education, preventive care, and early detection. At North Side Christian Health Center, we want to empower every patient with the knowledge and resources needed to reduce risks and catch potential concerns as early as possible.
Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women, but when it’s found early, treatment is often more effective and outcomes are much better. Regular screenings and knowing your own body can make a life-saving difference.
Schedule regular mammograms. Talk with your provider about when to begin screening based on your age, medical history, and risk factors.
Get clinical breast exams. Routine check-ups with a medical professional are an important part of preventive care.
Know what’s normal for you. If you notice any changes—such as a lump, skin changes, or nipple discharge—don’t wait to get it checked.
October is the perfect time to put your health first. Schedule your mammogram today! Early detection saves lives—and your health is worth it.
Join us in celebrating the heart of our healthcare team: Medical Assistants!
Medical Assistants are the unsung heroes of Community Health Centers—dedicated professionals who play a vital role in delivering compassionate, high-quality care. From taking vitals and preparing patients for exams, their work ensures that every patient feels heard, respected, and cared for.
They bring skill, empathy, and heart to every interaction—helping patients feel safe, supported, and empowered throughout their care journey.
On October 22, we honor the incredible work they do every single day. Thank you, Medical Assistants, for being the steady hands and kind hearts behind the care we provide. We couldn’t do it without you!

The flu is a respiratory disease caused by a virus that attacks the nose, throat, and lungs. Illness is usually mild or moderate, not requiring hospitalization. However, at times flu can be severe, even leading to death. It is not the same as the "stomach flu." Flu symptoms include fever, dry cough, sore throat, headache, extreme tiredness, and body aches. These symptoms usually begin suddenly and might be severe enough to stop your daily activities.
People age 65 and older.
Young children, especially those under 2 years old.
Pregnant women.
People with chronic health conditions such as asthma, diabetes, and heart disease.
American Indian and Alaska Natives.
Although these groups are at highest risk, anyone can become very sick with flu.
No. Some people get a mild fever or have discomfort for a short time after being vaccinated, but this is a sign that your body is responding to the vaccine. It is not the flu. Also, because there are many viruses circulating during flu season, it is possible to get sick with a different virus at this time.
This family-friendly event will have an ornament decorating station, a visit from Santa, food truck on site, fire pit roaring, treats from Bistro to Go, free hot chocolate, a special holiday pop up by Butterfat Gelato, and more to be announced. You don’t have to quit smoking in a single day—just start with day one. The Great American Smokeout, held on the third Thursday of November, is the perfect opportunity to begin your journey toward a smoke-free life. When you take that first step, you’ll be joining thousands of people across the country who are choosing better health and a lower risk of cancer.
Every year, smoking causes about 480,000 deaths in the U.S.—roughly 1 in 5 deaths. Although cigarette smoking rates have dropped from 42% in 1965 to 14% in 2019, about 34 million adults still smoke. The progress hasn’t been equal for everyone. Some groups—such as people with lower incomes or education levels, American Indian/Alaska Native and Black communities, military members, and those living with behavioral health conditions—continue to experience higher smoking rates and greater tobacco-related health impacts.
No matter your age or how long you’ve smoked, quitting brings immediate and long-term health benefits. It’s a process, and while it can be challenging, support makes a big difference. Combining counseling with medication can double or even triple your chances of success.
Take the first step this November. Make the Great American Smokeout your Day One toward a healthier, smoke-free future.

Time is running out to make a difference! The Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community is more than just a walk, it’s a step toward equity, dignity, and access to care for all. North Side Christian Health Center is proud to participate again this year, and we need your support now. Every dollar you give goes directly to our Uncompensated Care Fund, helping uninsured patients receive the same high-quality, respectful care our community has trusted for over 30 years.
A typical visit could cost up to $230—but with your help, uninsured patients using our sliding fee scale may pay as little as $20. Your donation bridges that gap and keeps care accessible for everyone. The Highmark Walk is a perfect way to support NSCHC. All event costs are generously covered by Highmark, meaning every dollar raised will go directly to patient care.
This year, we’re walking together for a healthier Northside—and your support is critical to making that vision a reality. Your gift keeps families well, children thriving, and our neighbors safer and stronger.
Please donate today and walk with us toward a healthier tomorrow. Join us as a walker, start your own fundraising team, or show your support by donating to one of NSCHC’s teams.

Starting in September and continuing on the first Thursday of every month for the rest of 2024, we will be offering free produce at NSCHC to our neighbors in need.
We have reached capacity for the Mission Vision Clinic and are no longer taking appointments. We hope to schedule another clinic very soon!

Allegheny Health Network (AHN) and Highmark Health will launch a new program to perform free Echocardiogram Screenings at North Side Christian Health Center’s Middle Street office on June 21, 2024.
The AHN Cardiovascular Institute will be performing the screenings. This program is being provided because overwhelming data shows that patients of diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds have an increased prevalence of heart disease. A sonographer from AHN will be on site at the Middle Street office to perform the tests. There is no cost for the tests or to receive your results. Anyone who is not currently under the care of a cardiologist and has unexplained, non-emergency chest pain, shortness of breath, passing out, or leg swelling can call to receive a free screening.
An echocardiogram uses sound waves to create pictures of the heart. This common test can show blood flow through the heart and heart valves. Your health care provider can use the pictures from the test to find heart disease and other heart conditions. This service is available to all NSCHC patients and to non-patients. This research project aims to gather information regarding heart health in our area. Baseline demographic data and echo results data will be collected for research purposes. All results will be shared with the patient within 7 to 10 business days. Results will also be shared with the patient’s PCP for follow-up care if needed.
This service is provided by appointment only on Friday, June 21 from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Please contact NSCHC staff at 412-321-4001 to schedule an appointment.
Connect with more than 50 employers, service organizations, and training providers.
