Rooted in Justice and Joy

Black Maternal Health Week 2026

As we recognize Black Maternal Health Week, we join the national movement led by the Black Mamas Matter Allianceto amplify the voices of Black mothers and advocate for systemic change in healthcare.

This year’s theme, "Rooted in Justice and Joy," marks the 10th anniversary of this vital campaign which works toward safe, dignified, and joyful birthing experiences for all. It is a time to honor the resilience of our community while addressing the urgent need to eliminate racial disparities in maternal health outcomes.

Why Black Maternal Health Matters

The statistics are a call to action. In the United States—and specifically within Pennsylvania—Black women are up to 3 times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications compared to their white counterparts. These disparities are not due to individual choices but are rooted in systemic inequities and implicit bias within the healthcare system.

Our Commitment to You: NSCHC provides high-quality care that treats patients as a whole person. Our primary care services include:

  • Women’s Care: From annual exams to family planning, our family medicine providers are here for you - ensuring that future mothers are ready for pregnancy and serving as an advocate during your pregnancy and after.

  • Pediatric Care: Our dedicated board-certified pediatrician is here to care for your baby at all stages of life.

  • Behavioral Health Support: Specialized counseling to support your emotional well-being throughout your pregnancy and postpartum journey.

  • A Supportive Medical Home: We offer a warm, inclusive environment where your concerns are heard and respected.

2026 Local Events & Advocacy

Pittsburgh is home to a powerful network of advocates working toward birth justice. This week, we encourage you to engage with local initiatives:

  • The PA Momnibus Act: Stay informed on the legislative package championed by local leaders like Rep. LaTasha D. Mayes, which aims to eliminate "maternal health deserts" and expand postpartum resources.

  • Community Support: Connect with organizations like Brown Mamas and the Black Women’s Policy Center for peer support, lactation resources (PUMP Act), and advocacy training.

  • Local Celebrations: Look out for community "Baby Boutiques" and wellness gatherings throughout the North Side and surrounding neighborhoods that celebrate the joy of Black Motherhood.

Take Charge of Your Health

You are your own best advocate. Whether you are planning a family, are currently pregnant, or are looking for care after giving birth for yourself or your new baby, we are here to walk with you.
