Celebrating the Grand Reopening of Historic Allegheny YMCA

The historic Allegheny YMCA officially reopened its doors to the public following a year-long closure and the completion of the first phase of a $26 million renovation.

Showing NSCHC’s continued commitment to community collaboration and neighborhood wellness, Bethany Blackburn, CEO, Carilynn Coulter, COO, and Dr. Dallas Malzi, CMO, were in attendance to celebrate the ribbon-cutting ceremony on North Avenue.

Expanding Community & Medical Support

As an organization dedicated to holistic community care, NSCHC is thrilled by the YMCA’s expanded scope of services. Notably, the renovation includes a newly-remodeled medical exam area designed to serve the building’s residents through a partnership with the Allegheny Health Network. Additionally, the facility is continuing renovations on its upper floors, which house more than 80 affordable single-room occupancy units for single men. To ensure no residents are displaced, these housing units are being updated one floor at a time.

Other key upgrades to the facility include:

  • Enhanced Accessibility: Two new elevators and a fully wheelchair-accessible main entrance.

  • Modernized Facilities: Fully renovated locker rooms, all-new fitness equipment, and the addition of building-wide air conditioning.

  • Preserved History: Refurbished original plaster mantelpieces, restored historic arched windows, and the preservation of the unique "log cabin room."

  • Behind-the-Scenes Infrastructure: Crucial updates to plumbing, a new boiler system, and major security upgrades.

What’s Next for the YMCA?

While the main facilities are now open to the public, work is still underway for the next phase of the rollout. Residents can look forward to:

  • The reopening of the swimming pool later this spring.

  • The completion of an upstairs gym.

  • A brand-new, year-round child care space.

  • Future community programming, including educational lectures and outreach.

NSCHC extends its warmest congratulations to our neighbors at the Allegheny YMCA on this beautiful transformation!
