Why Black History Month Matters for Health
This year marks the 100th anniversary of Black History Month — a century of recognizing the resilience, achievements, leadership, and faith that have shaped our nation and our communities. Black History Month began in February 1926 as Negro History Week, founded by Carter G. Woodson through the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, and has grown into a national observance of remembrance and reflection. This milestone invites us to honor the lessons of history, to remember stories that have too often been overlooked, and to recommit ourselves to truth, dignity, and justice.
For North Side Christian Health Center, this anniversary holds deep meaning. Our mission has always been rooted in providing compassionate healthcare to our neighbors — especially those who have historically faced barriers to care. Remembering the past strengthens our resolve to ensure that access to quality healthcare is not determined by zip code, income, or circumstance.
Why Representation in Healthcare Matters
Health outcomes are shaped by more than medical treatment alone. Generations of inequities in housing, education, employment, and access to healthcare have contributed to persistent disparities in conditions such as:
heart disease and hypertension,
diabetes
maternal and infant health outcomes
mental health access
preventive care utilization
Understanding this history allows us to better serve our patients today. Awareness leads to empathy. Empathy leads to better care.
Faith, Justice, and Health Equity
As a Christian health center, we believe every person is created in the image of God and deserves dignity, respect, and quality healthcare. Recognizing Black History Month aligns with our call to pursue justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with our community.
Health equity is not a trend — it is a commitment. It means:
listening to our patients’ lived experiences
removing barriers to care
providing culturally responsive services
building trust through consistency and compassion
advocating for the wellbeing of our community
Looking Ahead
As we honor 100 years of Black History Month, North Side Christian Health Center recommits to being a place of healing, hope, and health for all. When we acknowledge history and work intentionally toward equity, we create stronger outcomes — not just for individuals, but for entire communities.
Together, we move forward in faith and service.
