Food Bucks Program Expands Access to Healthy Food

North Side Christian Health Center (NSCHC) announced the launch of its new Food Bucks Program, made possible through the generous support of The Buhl Foundation. This innovative initiative expands NSCHC’s existing food access program, which currently provides food boxes in partnership with the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, by empowering patients to choose the fresh foods that best meet their families’ needs.

NSCHC Food Bucks can be redeemed at Mayfly Market & Deli, an independent grocery store located on Pittsburgh’s Northside. Unlike traditional food box programs, Food Bucks allow patients to select a wider range of nutritious staples—including fresh produce, milk, eggs, butter, chicken, bread, and orange juice—promoting dignity, choice, and improved nutrition.

“Access to healthy food is a critical part of whole-person care,” said Bethany Blackburn, CEO of NSCHC. “The Food Bucks program helps us meet patients where they are and strengthen their ability to make healthy choices for themselves and their families.”

NSCHC is seeking additional funding to grow and sustain the Food Bucks Program so it can reach even more patients experiencing food insecurity. Community members can help by donating to NSCHC on Give Big Pittsburgh Day, Tuesday, December 2, 2025.

All funds raised during Give Big Pittsburgh will directly support the Food Bucks Program, ensuring that more NSCHC patients have access to healthy, affordable food options.
