NSCHC benefits from Recovery Act grant

While still needing to raise essential operating support each year to cover the growing cost of providing health care to those who would otherwise go without, the benefits from our Recovery Act grant have already brought more medical staff and needed services. News about this grant and our Federally Qualified Health Center status have been very well-received in the local community. The neighborhood newspaper, The Northside Chronicle, published a recent article highlighting these happenings. Read the full article here.

NSCHC now a Federally Qualified Health Center

NSCHC is one of 126 new full status Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) approved nationally in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the recently passed economic stimulus bill. Welcome to Dr. Kate DeAntonis!

We are proud to announce Kate DeAntonis, MD, the newest physician at the North Side Christian Health Center. As our first staff pediatrician, Dr. DeAntonis will be part of our new Child and Family Health Center.

It's a long road ahead: an estimated third of Pittsburgh's homeless are children, 1-in-5 Northside births are to teen mothers, and childhood obesity, asthma and mental health remain major problems. Dr. DeAntonis will bring her pediatric specialty care focus to our youngest patients and their families.

The Child and Family Health Center was made possible by a grant from the Highmark Foundation.

Northview Heights Health Center Reopened

NSCHC has assumed management of the Northview Heights Health center to revitalize it as a medical home for residents of Northview Heights, one of Pittsburgh's largest housing complexes. The health center, located in our service area, was closed in 2007 by the private practice that had previously operated the center. Without a new provider, the 2,600 residents of this community would have been medically orphaned. We received a major grant from The Pittsburgh Foundation to assist us in reopening the health center. The health center has been closed for the past three weeks so that NSCHC could install new paint, flooring, furniture, and a new electronic medical record system (the first used in a Housing Authority of Pittsburgh health center).

We are pleased to welcome the newest members of our patient family, the residents of Northview Heights.

A New Home for the Health Center

The North Side Christian Health Center became the proud new owner of the building located at 816 Middle Street. This acquisition was made possible by the combination of generosity of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, a loan from the Northside Community Development Fund, and the use of the Pennsylvania Neighborhood Assistance Tax Credit Program. This quality building will nearly triple our available clinical space and will include a Child and Family Health Center and dental operatories. These renovations are made possible by the generous gifts of the DSF Charitable Foundation, Hillman Foundation, Laurel Foundation, Massey Charitable Trust, McCune Foundation, Richard King Mellon Foundation, Howard and Nell E. Miller Foundation, Charles M. Morris Charitable Trust, and anonymous trust, churches, and individuals.

The building deconstruction and reconstruction is being performed according to environmentally sustainable standards. The pursuit of this healthy building process is in line with our purpose of caring for body, mind and spirit by incorporating technologies that are environmentally responsible. We are striving to attain sustainable building certification upon completion. We project to move-in in summer 2008.

NSCHC Wins Service Award

The North Side Christian Health Center continues to increase its service to many more people in our area. As confirmation of this commitment, we were presented the 2007 "Service Provider of the Year" Award by the Northside Leadership Conference, a community organization made up of fourteen Northside groups and business partners. We were very pleased to be officially recognized as a good neighbor, and we look forward to many more years of partnership with the NSLC.
