We are excited to announce that North Side Christian Health Center has been approved by The
Kresge Foundation for a $100,000 Challenge Grant to help us Close the Gap to our capital goal.
Under the grant terms, NSCHC has until September 1, 2009 to raise $269,000 to release $100,000
from The Kresge Challenge which will complete our Expansion and Relocation budget. All contributions
we receive that are restricted to Close our Gap will qualify in meeting the Kresge challenge. We feel
truly blessed to have been approved by this very selective national foundation.
In making the grant award, Rip Rapson, President and CEO of The Kresge Foundation said, "We are
pleased to support North Side Christian Health Center in your effort to address health disparities and
improve outcomes for medically vulnerable, low income patients. You exemplify the values of this
Foundation with your focus on providing quality, accessible care to underserved families on Pittsburgh's
North Side."
We view this grant as an exciting opportunity to finally reach our capital campaign goal. North Side
Christian Health Center moved to 816 Middle Street on August 27, 2008 and immediately began seeing
patients. What we saw right from the first day is our patients being so affirming to us about the
excellent improvements. Our staff is more productive in the expanded and efficient lay-out and the
community has a wonderful new health care resource.
While we have moved-in and are providing services, we also are still finishing renovations. We could
not wait longer to set-up at 816 Middle Street since patient waiting lists had grown to 4-6 weeks out at
our prior cramped storefront location. This was unacceptable for our patients and our mission. So here
we are.
On hold is the replacement of our aged roof, Child and Family Health Center furnishings and active play
materials, enhancements to our Electronic Health Record System, needed storage for medications and
clinical supplies, completion of the Basement level to create additional office space for affinity health
education and prevention programs, and completion of HVAC and mechanical systems to improve
energy efficiency and indoor air quality. We now have the space to bring more services under our roof
and expand access and availability to more medically vulnerable patients.
